Voices of Fuzion - an evening of contemporary dance
After two solid season concerts at the Historic Asolo Theatre and an artistically busy year, Fuzión Dance Artists returns to premiere several new works on Friday January 9th and Saturday 10 h at 8:00PM in the evening, and also a matinee on Sunday January 11 at 2:00PM. Tickets range from $15-$30. Fuzión Dance Artists is Sarasota/Bradenton's first Contemporary Dance Company. Founded by Leymis Bolaños Wilmott and Rachael Inman, the two collaborate with other dance professionals and artists to create art that expresses the desires and struggles of the human spirit.
The evening will showcase a variety of artistic dance "voices" from Sarasota guest choreographer Stephanie Carter, New York choreographer, Elizabeth Higgins, and associate director Rachael Inman will be showing an extended aerial fabric piece. Wilmott will also be presenting three new dance works, two with original scores by local composer Edward Cosla, and one with live music by local musicians Scott Blum. One of her new pieces was commissioned by SRQ Premiere Magazine and was recently premiered at the Sarasota Opera this past September.
As a special treat, the company will be bring back favorites from last season an excerpt from guest choreographer Gerri Houlihan signature work called "Every Little Movement" which will be performed, to the music of the famous composer – Felix Mendelssohn. There will be a sequel to Kinda Cage'y collaboration with Francis Schwartz (Composer/Polyartist) an internationally acclaimed composer which holds advanced degrees from The Juilliard School and the University of Paris. Schwartz's music is performed regularly around the world and he is particularly noted for his unique music-theater strategies, which includes the attending public in the artistic performance.
Artistic director, Leymis Bolaños Wilmott is a recipient of the 2008 Leadership Award for Artistic Achievement from the Sarasota Arts Council, Dance Magazine award "Southeast Best Choreographer" and 2006 Sarasota County Arts Council's Individual Artist Fellowship Award. David Robinson of the Sarasota Herald Tribune described Wilmott's choreography as "soulful, moody, ebullient and explosive."
