For eight magical days, the meticulously restored, historic Crosley Estate on Sarasota Bay will be transformed into a glittering holiday wonderland to celebrate the 12th annual “Holidays at the Crosley, Festival of Trees.”

Guaranteed to delight visitors of all ages, the Festival will showcase dozens of beautifully decorated Christmas trees, wreaths, and vignettes by the area's top designers and decorators. The Festival also features rare exhibits of antique Crosley automobiles (weekend only), Crosley radios, and a vintage room-size model train display. Plan to have lunch or refreshments at the bayside pavilion.

Admission to the Tree Festival is $8 and free for children 12 & under.

Special Events at this year’s Tree Festival include…

“Afternoon Teas”

Served in the dining room of the historic estate overlooking the beautiful bay, the “tea” will feature homemade scones and other culinary delights exquisitely presented by Zest Catering of Sarasota. Seating is daily at 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. The price for the “tea,” which includes admission to the Festival, is $25. Space is limited and sold out early last year, so reserve now by calling 941-924-2535.

“It’s a Wonderful Life performed by the Manatee Players

Remember the good old days of radio-when people had to use their imagination - when the mind was a stage? Those days are back...only better! The award-winning Manatee Players brings you the heartwarming holiday classic IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE presented in all the glory of a live radio production. Watch a handful of actors bring over 60 characters to life. Radio pioneer Powel Crosley would be absolutely thrilled to have this homage to live radio performed on the beautiful bayside loggia of his former winter mansion!

Performances are Monday - Friday at 7:00 p.m., Saturday & Sunday at 1:00 p.m. and

7:00 p.m. Tickets are $19 for adults, $8 for children 12 and under, including admission to the Festival. Call 941-748-5875 to reserve tickets.

“Wine Tastings”

Add some holiday cheer to your Festival experience by enjoying an array of specialty wines served in the mansion by Off Broadway Wine and Spirits. The wine tasting is every evening, beginning at 5 p.m. and served with light hors d’oeuvres. Admission to the wine tasting is $10, paid at the festival. No advance reservations.

“Sarasota Bay Boat Rides”

Enjoy a scenic cruise along the beautiful shore of Sarasota Bay onboard the 40 passenger catamaran “Sea Dragon.” Savor spectacular views of some of the area's most cherished landmarks, exquisite homes, and Florida marine life! The boat is operated by Aquarian Quest and departs daily (excluding Sat.) from the Crosley boat basin at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. Rides are $8, paid at the festival. No advanced reservations.

Statewide Student Arts Contest

Art Builds Florida! Statewide Student Arts Contest sponsored by Citizens for Florida Arts, Inc. in collaboration with the Florida Department of State’s Division of Cultural Affairs, is open to all Florida high school students in grades 9-12. Florida’s 67 counties have been grouped into four regions; each region representing one of the focus areas of the plan. Students can submit original, 2-dimensional artwork to assist the Division in promoting the four key areas of Florida’s strategic plan, Culture Builds Florida’s Future. Finalists will be announced on the Division’s website in February 2009. The 4 winners and parent/guardian will be invited to Tallahassee in April 2009 for events recognizing their achievements in the contest. Simultaneously, an exhibition in the Division of Cultural Affairs Gallery for Innovation & the Arts will feature the work of the finalists next spring. The top winner in each of the four categories, Learning and Wellness, Strengthening the Economy, Design and Development, and Leadership will also be awarded a cash prize. “Peggy Potter: Pastel Moments” Exhibit opens at Anna Maria Island Art League on Friday, December 5

HOLMES BEACH – Long time Island resident and artist Peggy Potter’s pastels capture moments in time over the past 30 years. This exhibit is a rich retrospective of landscapes, seascapes and portraiture.

The opening reception on Friday December 5 is from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

The exhibit will be on view at the Island Art League located at 5312 Holmes Blvd, Holmes Beach, 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday - Friday through December 19

Antipasti PlatterCome Join us at Renaissance on 9th, 1816 9th Street West on Thursday, November 20 at 6:00pm for the third in a series of cooking demonstrations by Executive Chef Joe Stoddard. This month's theme is "Holiday Entertaining & Festive Presentation".
The menu starts with quick and easy appetizers that include platters of Antipasti with Roasted Pepper Salad, Marinated Olive Salad, Guacamole with fresh Chips, and the always popular Italian Cocktail Meatballs. Chef Joe will also be illustrating more substantial fare with Argentine Stuffed Flank Steak and Tangerine Ham. Artisan breads and wine will accompany the dishes for attendees to enjoy.

As always, the dishes will be prepared live with step-by-step instructions, and attendees will receive the recipes to take home and try on their own.

For Adults: "Touch and Sound: The Perceptual World of the Manatee"
Dr. Gordon Bauer, Pegs Scripps Buzzelli Chair in Psychology and Chair of the Division of Social Sciences at New College, will be presenting his research on the perceptual world of manatees. Recent investigations of manatee hearing, touch and vision reveal a unique constellation of attributes. He will also touch on the flavor detection studies currently being conducted with our resident manatee, Snooty. This takes place in the boardroom, so you can observe the manatees as you learn about them!
For Kids: Snooty Club Decal Contest!
While your parents are learning about manatee senses, you can join aquarium staff upstairs for various manatee activities, including a decal contest. Kids of all ages are invited to participate in designing a decal for our Snooty Club Manatee Rehabilitation Program. Guidelines and art supplies will be provided. If submissions are not completed this evening, they are due no later than December 1, 2008. Not feeling artistic? That's okay! We'll have other crafts and educational activities, too.

Anna Maria Island "Meet the Maestro"

Anna Maria Island Community Chorus and Orchestra (AMICCO) invites you to attend its inaugural "Meet the Maestro" event, to be held on Saturday, Nov. 15 from 4-6 p.m. at The Studio at Gulf and Pine on Anna Maria Island. You will have an opportunity to meet Maestro Alfred Gershfeld of AMICCO and to mingle with others who appreciate the presence of this wonderful chorus and orchestra on Anna Maria Island.

The Maestro and his wife Yelena will tell the amazing story of their experiences in Russia and what they went through to immigrate to the United States including the heart-warming reception by Americans. Attendees will have the opportunity to watch past performances selected by the Maestro on wide-screen DVD in the Studio's Media Center.

Enjoy wine and refreshments provided by AMICCO in the wonderful setting provided by The Studio at Gulf and Pine in Anna Maria which is also the headquarters of the Lawton Chiles Foundation. AMICCO wishes to thank the former First Lady of Florida, Mrs. Rhea Chiles for her generosity in allowing AMICCO to use her studio for this rare event. Attendees will also discover a thrilling collection of fine art of several world-class artists.

This event will kick off the 2008-2009 season of the Anna Maria Island Community Chorus and Orchestra which will perform its exciting season opener the next day, Sunday, November 16th at 2 pm at CrossPointe Fellowship at 8605 Gulf Drive in Anna Maria.
