FST’s Announces its Unforgettable 2008 Stage III Season
(Sarasota, Florida) - Florida Studio Theatre's Stage III Season is ready to challenge your mind and entertain with a docu-drama, a magical adventure and an a cappella phenomenon! This year the plays discover and theatrical styles bringing audiences a well-balanced theatrical experience.
Kicking off the 2008 season is the alarming docu-drama In the Belly of the Beast, by Jack Henry Abbott, material originally arranged and edited by Adrian Hall, further arranged and adapted by Robert Falls.
In the Belly of the Beast explores the criminal mind. A delinquent foster child, Jack Henry Abbott was imprisoned at a young age. He was robbed of nurturing, cut off from any human contact for more than twenty years. Knowing only primal survival instincts, he lived a constant struggle to remain human, like a solitary light bulb flickering in and out of Sanity. Once released into the world, the ravishing beast inside took over any human spirit he had left.
Directed by Debra Whitfield, the show was called "awesome, brilliant, perversely ingenuous" by The New York Times. The cast will include David Sitler as Abbott, Patrick Jones and Douglas Coler.
In the Belly of the Beast begins February 6 and runs through February 24, 2008.
Glen Berger’s Underneath the Lintel explores the myth of the "Wandering Jew" and will be the second play presented in the 2008 Stage III Season. Winner of the 2001 Ovation Award for "Best Play," it was hailed by The New York Times as "A gripping production... a Da Vinci Code maze of clues and speculations."
A small town civil servant, in a socialistic society, unlocks an ancient myth embarking on a quest to find who anonymously returned a book, 113 years overdue. A clue scribbled in the margin and an unclaimed dry-cleaning ticket takes us on a magical adventure that spans the globe and the ages.
Directed by Kate Alexander and starring, in the one man show, Richard McWilliams who is currently playing the Colonel in the Mainstage production of Carlyle Brown’s Pure Confidence.
Underneath the Lintel begins March 5 and runs through March 23, 2008.
FST ends this year’s Stage III Season with the Grammy nominated a cappella phenomenon Toxic Audio. Five Voices...No Instruments. Never Underestimate the Power of the Human Voice. Toxic Audio, explores the boundaries of the human voice. Winner of the 2004 Drama Desk Award for "Unique Theatrical Experience," they were rated Number One in the WALL STREET JOURNAL/ZAGAT THEATER SURVEY surpassing The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast.
Toxic Audio begins April 15 and runs through May 4, 2008.
Stage III debuted in January 2005 to answer an increasing demand from local audiences for edgier works that showed the uncommon human experience and challenged previously held beliefs and values. Featuring plays that challenge with as much gusto as they entertain, FST Stage III pushes the envelope of contemporary theatre and brings fresh, edgy works to the Sarasota theatrical landscape. Singular in taste, fresh in approach, FST's Stage III offers the adventurous theatergoer the opportunity to see plays that both challenge and entertain. In its first two seasons, FST Stage III has attracted more than 3000 subscribers and continues to grow.
Because of its challenging nature, the Stage III series may include plays with language and/or situations that are uncomfortable or offensive to some audience members. Viewer discretion is advised.
All three shows in the Stage III Season - In the Belly of the Beast, Underneath the Lintel and Toxic Audio - will be presented at FST's Gompertz Theatre. Single tickets range from $19 for previews to $29-32 for regular performances. A subscription to all 3 shows ranges from $39-52. Known as Sarasota's Contemporary Theatre, Florida Studio Theatre was founded in 1973 by Jon Spelman. Starting out as a small touring company, FST traveled to places such as migrant camps and prisons. The company eventually settled down into a permanent home, acquiring the former Woman's Club building - now renamed the Keating Theatre. In the years that followed, Florida Studio Theatre established itself as a major force in American Theatre, presenting contemporary theatre in its three theatre venues: the Keating Theatre, the Goldstein Cabaret and its newest space, the Gompertz Theatre.
Even with its growth, Florida Studio Theatre remains firmly committed to making the arts accessible and affordable to a broad-based audience. Under Richard Hopkins, Artistic Director and CEO, FST develops theatre that speaks to our living, evolving, and dynamically changing world. As FST grows and expands, it continues to provide audiences with challenging, contemporary drama and innovative programs.
