THE ART SEASON IS YEAR ROUND, June 07
The other day someone said the season was over. I do not think so. I think the season is endless. Sure the snowbirds go home but then the tourists come. The tourists come from Miami, London, Hamburg, Chicago and so on, ready to take advantage of off season prices. The beach-weary need distraction and the art scene provides all that and more.
I spent over an hour with 2 families from Miami yesterday. We talked, shared art stories and they left with 4 T shirts and 2 cows. Hansel, my little Westie had 2 playmates in the shape of the the 2 little girls and then everybody had to have their picture taken with Hansel in front of the art to commemorate their visit.
I expect visitors like this all Summer long and so the Arts Council stays open 10-4 M-S to be here for them. Maybe we should not all be in such a hurry to get away for the Summer because the "season is over".
Coming up; answers to the questions about cultural awareness in Manatee County. The Arts Council has gone to great pains to design a survey about cultural awareness and telephones in local homes will be ringing July 8th between 3 pm and 7 pm to get your feedback. The survey is short and will only take about 5-10 minutes to answer, so DON'T HANG UP if you are lucky enough to be called.
Preparations are in full swing for the Manatee Arts Extravaganza to be held Friday Nov. 9, Saturday Nov. 10 and Sunday November 11th. This is the largest arts festival ever to be held in our fair City of Bradenton and promises to become one of the premier festivals along the Coast. The kickoff concert Friday night will be at Mattisons Riverwalk in the ballroom with 5-6 bands performing throughout the evening, yummy meal worthy hors d' oeuvres and dancing. Tickets are $75.00 to help offset the cost of the rest of the festival. On Saturday November 10: 50-60 artists will line both sides of Barcarrota Blvd., performing artists such as the Sarasota Ballet will be on stage in the Manatee Players Theater, other performers will entertain from the Library stage and great acts like the Island Hobbits will be on the City stage near the food vendors and Tiki Bar. The action will start about 11 and last until 6. Make sure the kids get to add their creativity to the kids corner, a sidewalk mural of limitless proportions. On Sunday the 11th: engage in all those wonderful activities on Barcarrota and then ride the Trolley to the Convention Center for Photofest. See the works of many local photographers on display and for sale or join a demonstration with James Johnson from JPI Imaging, work with the Safari Club models, the latest in lighting techniques and have a ball. Remember only you can make the Manatee Arts Extravaganza the best festival around so mark down those dates, November 9-11th, Sponsors and artists call the Arts Council for application packets at 941-746-2223.
Remember...the ARTS know no season!
